Highmark Caring Place offers advice on what to say to help grieving children during the holidays

November 17, 2016 is Children's Grief Awareness Day. Its purpose is to remind us how hard the holidays are for children who have had a parent, grandparent or sibling die. They need extra support and to know that they are not alone.

Highmark Caring Place provides guidance to school teachers, parents for helping kids back to school when a family member has died over the summer

This week children across Pennsylvania and the country will head back to school. They have new teachers and friends to meet, new classrooms to explore and a brand new school year to look forward to. Yet some children will be looking back. For children who have had a parent, sibling or other close relative die over the summer, returning to school is fraught with special anxiety and discomfort.

Highmark Caring Place expands grief support groups to 65 Pennsylvania schools

Since launching a pilot program with four schools during the 2013-2014 academic year, the Highmark Caring Place, A Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents and Their Families, has partnered with 65 schools in Pennsylvania to make school-based grief support groups available to children who are grieving the death of someone close to them.

The Highmark Caring Place will recognize its 695 volunteers, including 74 individuals who reached 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year service milestones in their volunteer work with members of the community at the organization's four Pennsylvania locations.
